At the time of designing, the name which was decided was “Museum of Knowledge”. Earlier it was decided to transform it as the cultural centre of Ahmedabad which will have different area and every area will have their own topic to research about. Later on, the whole idea was changed and only the museum was built and its foundation stone was laid on 9th April 1954.

The Signature design on the museum was the Piers which are approximately 11ft high. The exterior portion of the building is made up of plain bricks and the architectural surface is of rough concrete. The way of designing has made the structure capable enough of protecting itself from a hot climate. The interior of the building contains a large court with a swimming pool and the walls are finished just by plaster.

The entire maintenance of this museum and all the additional duties are maintained by the municipal corporation of Ahmedabad. The entry fee for all the visitors is completely free. The entry time to visit the museum is at 10.00-12.00 and again at 4.00-6.00.

The museum has different sections of the subject to check out. It has the art and photography of Mahatma Gandhi and the other freedom fighters, and also the story of their struggle that they had gone through in the entire phase of the Independence struggle. It also contains the concept of various religious communities that are present in Ahmedabad. It also has the presence of the world’s largest incense stick (4.5mtr). This museum also has the section known as “Kite Museum” which has some interesting collections of kites and vintage pictures of kites and many more.
